The Yellow House by John Raffetto
Worn shoes crunch the gravel street
as daytime flattens into starry nights.
Steel tracks hoist a steam engine past
black tile roofs bitten by sun
and dry winds of southern France.
Mixing colors in a tight blue bedroom
hallucination brush strokes and grooves
torn at midnight from echoes of laughter —
an escape from a blazing scythe of Holland grain fields
swung with calloused hands and hungry eyes.
Swirling sun on a bloody afternoon
the vision is lost
slumped upon a wooden bed
in the blue bedroom
at the yellow house.
